JAYAPURA, WEST PAPUA, MARCH 6
Unswayed by threats, previous police brutality and their release from prison yesterday, Youth and Students of West Papua have joined today with detainees to keeping up the pressure on the Indonesian Government in demanding a Referendum for the future of West Papua. Eighty students braved BRIMOB to hold a peaceful rally on the steps of the Papuan People’s Assembly in Jayapura.
One peloton of police were attempting to disperse students violently despite permission to hold peaceful rally, but students decided to close the rally to prevent violence. Six student leaders have been taken by police to POLRES Jayapura for interrogation, though all previous detainees have indicated they are ready to go back to gaol.
The demands from the demonstrators are as follows:
1. United Nations must immediately send international observers to West Papua;
2. We the West Papuan people give support to Vanuatu and other Pacific states to list West Papua for discussion at the Decolonisation Committee of the United Nations in 2008;
3. The United Nations must immediately revoke UN Resolution 2504 (1969) on the fraudulent and illegal Act Of Free Choice of 1969.
4. REFERENDUM for West Papua to determine its own future.
More protests are planned until Indonesia Listens.
